ADC Amends Constitution as 94% of Delegates Vote ‘Yes’ at National Convention in Abuja

ABUJA, Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially amended its constitution following a landslide vote at its National Convention held at the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja.

Announcing the final results, Emeka Ihedioha, former Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the ADC Electoral Sub-Committee, revealed that 1,576 delegates were accredited for the exercise. A total of 1,471 delegates voted in favor of amending the party’s constitution, representing 94 percent of the vote. Eleven votes were voided.

“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result announced, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention that took place at the Rainbow Event Centre, Abuja,” Ihedioha declared.

Prior to the vote, the convention ratified several key resolutions from the party’s 97th, 98th, and 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings. Chinedu Idigo, the National Organising Secretary, outlined the changes, which include a waiver of membership requirements, the suspension of zoning provisions for executive positions, and the suspension of the rule requiring that a vacant office be filled by someone from the same zone as the previous occupant.

In a major shake-up, the 99th NEC meeting had dissolved the Chief Ralph Nwosu-led National Working Committee (NWC) with immediate effect. The convention formally ratified that decision, confirming that the David Mark-led NWC has now assumed full responsibility for running the party’s affairs.

In his closing remarks, the new National Chairman, David Mark, a former Senate President and ex-member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), praised the convention’s organisation. He said that despite having attended several PDP national conventions in the past, none matched the efficiency of Tuesday’s ADC convention.

Mark described the event as an “excellent performance” and struck an optimistic note about the party’s future, declaring that the convention marked the beginning of the ADC’s journey to Aso Rock in 2027.
