Delta Rights Activist Slams Governor for Gifting 65 Luxury SUVs to Monarchs, Calls It Misguided Priority

ASABA, Delta State — Comrade Victor Ojei, a prominent rights activist from Wong Box Nigeria, has condemned the recent decision by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to distribute 65 Toyota Prado SUVs to selected traditional rulers in Delta State. Ojei argues that the gesture, while visually appealing, reflects a serious misallocation of resources.

In a statement, Ojei highlighted the exorbitant costs associated with maintaining the luxury vehicles, which he claims far exceed their benefits, especially for traditional leaders in rural and riverine areas. He noted that routine engine oil changes and basic servicing can cost between ₦85,000 and ₦120,000, while shock absorbers and tyres range from ₦150,000 to ₦450,000 and ₦120,000 to ₦200,000, respectively.

Ojei emphasized that for many traditional rulers in communities like Ojobo, Ogulagha, Oporoza, Akugbene, and Obotebe, these SUVs are impractical due to poor road conditions. “A vehicle that cannot reach a monarch’s palace becomes a burden, not a benefit,” he stated.

He criticized the governor for spending funds on luxury items instead of investing in essential infrastructure such as bridges, potable water projects, and health centers, which would have a direct positive impact on local populations. Ojei concluded that true development requires addressing the urgent needs of the community rather than offering luxury gifts that create social stigma and financial strain.
