Court Overturns Wale adedayo’s Impeachment , Awards N30m to ex-Ijebu East LG Chairman

An Ogun State High Court has declared the impeachment of former Ijebu East Local Government Chairman, Hon. Wale Adedayo, as illegal, null, and void. The court awarded him N30 million in damages.

Presiding Judge, Justice Catherine Ogunsanya, ruled that the impeachment process conducted by the Ijebu East Local Government Council and its Legislative Council in September 2023 was unlawful. She stated the action violated provisions of the Ogun State Local Government Law, 2006.

Justice Ogunsanya held that the defendants acted outside their jurisdiction. She also found that Adedayo was denied a fair hearing, as he was not formally served with the allegations against him or given an opportunity to respond before his impeachment.

“The purported impeachment of the Claimant… is invalid, null and void,” the judge declared, ordering the resolutions and impeachment to be set aside.

The court awarded Adedayo N30 million as general damages for his “illegal, unlawful and malicious” suspension and impeachment by the council.

However, the case against the Ogun State Governor, listed as the first defendant, was dismissed.

Adedayo was impeached in September 2023 after raising allegations against the state government regarding local government fund allocations.
